ছাত্রের বাবা: হ্যাঁ, বলছি। আপনি কে বলছেন?
শিক্ষক: আমি আপনার ছেলের ইউনিভার্সিটি থেকে বলছি। হেড অফ দি ডিপার্টমেন্ট।
ছাত্রের বাবা: ও আচ্ছা! কেমন আছেন স্যার?
ছাত্রের বাবা: বলুন।
শিক্ষক: গতকাল সেমিস্টার ফাইনালের রেজাল্ট বের হয়েছে। আপনার ছেলে দুই কোর্সে ফেল করেছে। আপনি কি জানেন?
ছাত্রের বাবা: ও বলেছে আমাকে!
শিক্ষক: আমাদের ইউনিভার্সিটিতে কিছু রুলস আছে। আমরা ফেল করা ছাত্রছাত্রীদের আবার পরীক্ষায় বসে পাস করার সুযোগ দিই। এরপর ফেল করলে ইউনিভার্সিটিতে রাখার নিয়ম নেই।
ছাত্রের বাবা: তা এসব আমাকে কেন বলছেন?
শিক্ষক: (থতমত খেয়ে) না, মানে, আমি বলছিলাম আপনার ছেলে ফেল করেছে। আপনার কি উচিত না তার পড়াশোনার প্রতি খেয়াল রাখা?
ছাত্রের বাবা: আমাকেই যদি তার পড়াশোনার দায়দায়িত্ব নিতে হয়, তাহলে আপনারা আছেন কি জন্য?
শিক্ষক: আপনি কাউন্সেলিং করতে পারেন, বোঝাতে পারেন।
ছাত্রের বাবা: অবশ্যই আমি আমার ছেলেকে বোঝাতে পারি। কিন্তু শিক্ষক হিসেবে আপনি কি তার সাথে কথা বলেছেন?
শিক্ষক: মানে? বুঝলাম না!
ছাত্রের বাবা: আমি বলতে চাচ্ছি, আমার ছেলে যে ফেল করল, গলদটা কোথায় বোঝার চেষ্টা করেছেন কি? পুরোটা দোষ কি ওর একার? আপনাদের কি কোনো দায়ভার নেই?
শিক্ষক: কি বলতে চাইছেন আপনি?
ছাত্রের বাবা: দেখুন, স্যার, খুব স্পষ্ট আর সহজ ভাষায় বলছি। এভাবে ছাত্রের ব্যর্থতায় সরাসরি বাবা-মাকে তলব করার আগে আপনাদের একবার ভাবা উচিত। পড়াশোনার জন্য ছেলেকে আপনাদের কাছে পাঠিয়েছি। তাকে পড়াতে না পারার, লেখাপড়ার প্রতি আগ্রহ তৈরি করতে না পারার, সফলতার পথ দেখাতে না পারার ব্যর্থতা প্রথমত আপনাদেরই। বেতন তো ঠিকই নেন। ছাত্রের সফলতারও ভাগও চান! তাহলে ব্যর্থতার ভার কেন শুধু ছাত্র আর তার অভিভাবকের ঘাড়ে চাপবে?
শিক্ষক: আমি আসলে ওভাবে বোঝাতে চাইনি।
ছাত্রের বাবা: কোনভাবেই বোঝানোর দরকার পড়ত না, যদি যথাযথ শিক্ষকের দায়িত্ব আপনারা পালন করতেন।
শিক্ষক: আমি রাখছি।
ছাত্রের বাবা: দাঁড়ান! আপনার বাবার ফোন নম্বরটা দিন।
শিক্ষক: মানে? কেন?
ছাত্রের বাবা: ব্যর্থ ছাত্রের পিতাকে ফোন করে আপনি যে দায়িত্ব পালন করেছেন, ব্যর্থ শিক্ষকের পিতাকে ফোন করে একই দায়িত্ব আমিও পালন করতে চাই!
Teacher: Hello, is this Mr. Sujan Chowdhury?
Student's Father: Yes, speaking. Who is this?
Teacher: I'm calling from your son's university. Head of the Department.
Student's Father: Oh, I see! How are you, Sir?
Teacher: I’m fine. I wanted to talk about your son.
Student's Father: Go ahead.
Teacher: The semester final results came out yesterday. Your son has failed in two courses. Are you aware of this?
Student's Father: Yes, he told me.
Teacher: Our university has certain rules. We allow students who fail to retake the exams. But if they fail again, we can’t retain them in the university.
Student's Father: So why are you telling me all this?
Teacher: (Taken aback) No, I mean… I was just saying that your son has failed. Don’t you think it’s your responsibility to pay attention to his studies?
Student's Father: If I have to take full responsibility for his studies, then what are you there for?
Teacher: You could provide him with counseling, try to make him understand.
Student's Father: Of course, I can talk to my son. But as his teacher, have you spoken to him?
Teacher: What do you mean? I don’t understand.
Student's Father: I mean, have you tried to understand where things went wrong that led to my son failing? Is it entirely his fault? Don’t you bear any responsibility?
Teacher: What are you trying to say?
Student's Father: Look, sir, let me put it very clearly and simply. Before directly summoning the parents for a student's failure, you should reflect a bit. I’ve sent my son to you for his education. If you fail to teach him, fail to spark interest in studies, fail to show him the path to success — then the primary failure is yours. You have no problem taking the tuition fees. You even want a share of the credit when a student succeeds! Then why should the burden of failure fall solely on the student and their parents?
Teacher: I didn’t mean it that way.
Student's Father: You wouldn’t need to explain in any way if you had fulfilled your responsibilities as a proper teacher.
Teacher: I’m hanging up now.
Student's Father: Wait! Give me your father's phone number.
Teacher: What? Why?
Student's Father: Just as you fulfilled your duty by calling the father of a failing student, I want to do the same — by calling the father of a failing teacher!
